Myanmar Travel News
Experience the 8th Annular Eclipse of the Sun of the 21st Century
on 15th January 2010 wherever you are in Myanmar!!!
On Friday the 15th January 2010, the 8th annular eclipse of the sun will be visible in partial form on two continents; Africa (only on the territory of Central African Republic), South and South East Asia.

The band of centrality of this annular solar eclipse is of an exceptional width from 320 to 365km on average and to be visible for the same duration of the annular phase, varies from 7 and 11minutes, depending on the area of the crossed countries. It's central band will cross the north of the democratic republic of Congo, the Uganda, the Kenya and in the south of Somalia before crossing the Indian Ocean passing by the Republic of Maldives, the South of India, the North of Sri Lanka, Bay of Bengal and MYANMAR before coming to an end in the north east of China.

The annular solar eclipse is a rare, spectacular and fascinating event to observe. This January 2010, you can observe it from Myanmar, one of a very few places on earth where the eclipse will be visible.

Introduction of Royalty Fees to Myanmar Himalayas
From September 2009, Ministry of Tourism introduced a Royalty Fee of US$15 per day per person for travellers travelling to Myanmar Himalayas & Khakabo Razi National Park. Charges are calculated based on the number of days travellers stay in Putao (the base town/ gateway to Myanmar Himalayas) or beyond. Tour companies operating in Myanmar Himalaya area worry that this may reduce the number of incoming tourists to the region. It is discouraging especially for tour companies, which are hoping to promote Myanmar Himalayas among travellers with tighter budgets. However, some argue that most Himalaya trips are already upmarket, expensive trips and will not put off the current high spending customer that significantly.

Inle Lake - Destination of the month
Inle Lake is the second largest lake with the approximate surface area of 116 sq. kilometres in Myanmar. It is located in the cool green highlands of the Shan State, an area of outstanding natural beauty and cultural interest. Inle's most unusual feature is its extraordinary 'leg-rowing fishermen' who have developed an original, eccentric method of rowing their small boats with one leg.

Floating gardens are built-up from strips of water hyacinth and mud, dredged from the lakebed. Villages, farms and monasteries perch over the water on stilts. Inle's unique product is a linen-like fabric woven out of filaments pulled from the lotus stems, the only fabric of its kind in the world.
Visitors can appreciate the beautiful lake, while relaxing at a lakeside hotel built in the local, traditional style. The slow boat rides at sunset through fields of lotus plants are the most romantic, while those visitors who are more adventurous can go trekking to the villages on the banks of the lake, or the monasteries perched high above. Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda located in the Inle Lake is one of the most famous principal shrines in Myanmar. Its festival held in September/October draws celebrants from far and wide, not only to pay homage to the statues of Buddha, but also for great fun fair and for the unique leg-rowing competitions. A visit to Inle is not quite complete without a visit to Shwe Indein Pagoda, which is located on the western bank of the lake. The mesmerizing view from pagoda hill releases the fatigue and refreshes everybody who visits the pagoda.
The lake is a perfect staging point for other attractions in the region. Situated at the foot of Mene-taung is Pindaya, known to the world as the home of the countless Buddha Images in its extensive lime stone caves and picturesque lake. Further away, the old British hill station of Kalaw is a great place to escape the heat and take leisurely walks amongst the pine trees and rambling Tudor bungalows. The road from Kalaw to Pindaya passes through countryside of magnificent scenic beauty.

A visit to Myanmar is not complete without a visit to Inle Lake and it is our highly recommended a-must-see place on your tour map!!!
