Crossing Myanmar Borders

As visitors can now enter or leave Myanmar overland via its border ports, you can avoid expensive international air tickets and could save time by not travelling through the capital city Yangon unnecessarily, and to make the most of your travel between Myanmar and other Greater Mekong regions.

The Most popular border crossing points:
  • Mu Se (Myanmar) - Jaegao/ Ruili (China)
  • Tachileik (Myanmar) - Mae Sai (Thailand)
  • Kawthaung (Myanmar) - Ranong (Thailand)

To arrange border crossing permits and visa at the check point, travellers must submit their application forms together with other required documents and it is required to submit the application form a minimum of one month in advanced. 

 


When applying for the permits and visa at the check points, all travellers are required to submit the following documents, providing/stating all the requested details precisely:

 

1.       Photocopy of applicant's passport; the biodata page with your photograph, signature and passport validity (validity period page with a minimum of 6 months from date of entry).

 

2.       You are also requested to provide the following personal details:

a)    Full Name as appear in passport

b)    Passport Number

c)    Passport Issue Date

d)    Passport Expiry Date

e)    Place of Issue

f)     Issuing Authority

g)    Father's Name

h)    Nationality

i)     Race

j)     Date of Birth

k)    Place of Birth

l)     Sex

m)   Religion

n)    Occupation

o)    Permanent Address

p)    Arrival Date and Flight Details

q)    Departure Date and Flight Details

r)     Detail Itineraries/ Details of the Tour Plan

s)     Address in Myanmar/ Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in Myanmar

t)     Tour Company/Travel Agent which the travellers have used the services

u)    Other Personal Related Data
- Hair Colour
- Eyes Colour
- Complexion/ Skin Colour
- Height
- Visible Mark on face

  

3.       One recent passport photograph (please attach your photograph with glue at the top right corner of the application form.)

a)  Please note that the passport photo must be a recent true likeness of the individual, taken within the last 3 months and must be undamaged (not torn, creased or marked)

b)  The photo must be in colour, not black and white

c)  The photo must be taken against  white or cream background

d)  The photo must be taken with the eyes open and clearly visible (with no sunglasses or tinted spectacles and no hair across the eyes)

e)  The photo must be free from reflection or glare on spectacles, the frames of which must not cover the eyes

f)  The photo must be of the full head, without any covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons

g)  The photo must be printed professionally with matt/ semi-matt finish or taken in a passport photo booth.

 

 Please also note that ONLY APPLICATIONS WITH ALL OF THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS AS SPECIFIED ABOVE CAN BE PROCESSED.

IN SOME CASES FURTHER DOCUMENTS AND GUARANTEES WILL BE REQUIRED with your application, e.g. return airplane ticket, hotel booking confirmation letter, etc.

 

Mu Se, Tachileik and Kawthaung are trading Myanmar border towns and have safe and comfortable hotels for travellers. Travellers can carry on to their next destination from there.


Myanmar-Thailand borders
  • Tachileik across from Mae Sai in the North
  • Three Pagoda Pass near Payathonzu
  • Myawaddy across from Mae Sot
  • Kawthaung across from Ranong in the Southern tip

Myanmar-China borders
  • Mu Se across from Jaegao
  • Lweje across from Tunghung

The border crossing from Yunnan of Southern China into Nam Kham, Kyukoke, Kwanlong and Mong Lar of Myanmar are remote.

The most promising borders for visitors are Mu Se-Jaegao and Lweje-Tunghung of Myanmar/ China border, Tachileik-Mae Sai and Ranong-Kawthaung of Myanmar/ Thai border.

Mekong River runs from Northern Yunnan Province of Southern China to Southern Thailand passing Myanmar at Golden Triangle region where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Myanmar situated on the west side of Mekong River and is the largest and longest part of the Greater Mekong sub-region (almost 1/3 of the Mekong route).
